Uncle Nicky’s Italian specialty menu features Italian fare often reserved for sit-down and late-night eateries, with items like pork bolognese, chilled poached shrimp, and carpaccio, a raw beef dish made with Wagyu steak. .

But Hyde Park Restaurant, which opened in 2019, serves its produce in an accessible cafe-style location, which offers espresso drinks, pastries, and cocktails focused on Italian bitters, such as Negronis, as well as pasta dishes.

“We wanted something that was neighborhood friendly, a bit more accessible to this community,” said co-owner Nic Yanes.

Yanes added that being able to walk and cycle in the Hyde Park area was an inspiration behind the concept.

“It’s definitely a neighborhood that has a lot of character,” said Yanes.

Yanes also co-owns Juniper, an upscale restaurant in East Austin, a second Uncle Nicky’s Italian Specialties restaurant at 1123 E. 11th St., Austin, and owns or operates a handful of other restaurants throughout town.

Yanes said the inspiration for the menu was the flavors of northern Italy combined with a more American take on the dishes.

He said the restaurant served as a place for residents to have coffee or a cocktail while they worked or came to collect food with their families. He said several patrons walked around for coffee in the morning and a Negroni in the afternoon.

“It’s really just a nice, relaxed place to be able to come in and out with friends or grab a quick bite to eat or study or read or have a drink with friends,” Yanes said.
