A New Years Eve party at a Bangkok restaurant ended with a bang last night as police raided the facility and arrested 40 people on illegal drug charges. Police arrived at the scene of Soi Ratchadanivet in Huai Khwang in the early hours of New Year’s Day and found drugs scattered around the scene, with participants testing positive for illicit drugs.
23 men and 17 women were found in the restaurant when police from Huai Khwang arrived at the party scene, although it was not revealed whether they were Thais or foreigners. Alcohol use was present as one would expect for a New Years celebration, but after passing 40 participants urine tests, 27 of them were found to have illegal drugs. in their systems.
As police searched the area, they found drugs that had fallen on the ground and recovered 5 grams of ketamine and 8 ecstasy pills. When questioning people in the restaurant, asking who owned the drugs, they were unsurprisingly puzzled, with staff and guests stating that they had no idea who the drugs had been found.
The restaurant manager that evening was arrested and faces charges related to illegal drugs found there as well as operating an entertainment-style venue and violating social distancing and other Covid-19 safety precautions in violation of current pandemic protocols. The 40 people found at the restaurant were also arrested at the Huai Khwang Police Station.
The restaurant has not been named and has not been confirmed as a real restaurant or as one of the many bars and nightlife menus that have been converted to ‘restaurants’ in order to open under Covid restrictions -19. Police said they would investigate details of the drugs at the premises before going public with the company name.
