Obituaries

Richard, “Dick”, Horan, 76, passed away peacefully at home on August 15, 2021 surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer.

Dick was born February 9, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois, to Dorothy Duncan and Michael Aloysious Horan. He grew up in DeKalb, Ill., Where he attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and DeKalb High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from UW-Platteville in 1967. He then obtained a Masters of Business Administration from Georgia State University.

He proudly served his country as the United States Army Food Inspection Specialist (SP5) during the Vietnamese conflict at Eau Claire, WI, Bangkok, Thailand and Fort Gordon, Georgia, and he was awarded the A[DH1] Rmy Praise Medal.

He married the love of his life, Carol Emily Sylvester, on July 20, 1968 in Middleton.

Dick worked for 25 years as a production foreman at Hormel Foods in Tucker, GA, Austin and St. James, MN. In 1996, he established his own business, Assurance Inspection Services, a residential and environmental inspection company. He was also a trainer at the Milwaukee Lead and Asbestos Information Center. Dick was a life member of Middleton VFW Post 8216, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus of St Bernard Parish, of which he was a long-time member.

Dick was extremely proud of his Irish heritage, choosing Ireland as his number one European destination. Because he loved to travel, he and Carol visited all but three of the American states, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and several European countries. He loved the outdoors, especially near the waters of lakes and oceans. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and gardening in the summer, snowshoeing and skiing in the winter. Grandchildren still talk about fishing with Grandpa. Rides in his little red convertible highlighted many hot afternoons. He loved to cook and organize large family gatherings. He loved sports and encouraged the Wisconsin Badgers, Milwaukee Brewers and was a fan and shareholder of the Green Bay Packer.

Dick is survived by his 53 year old wife, Carol; his children, Brian (Shasta) Horan, Lynne (John) Chomicz and Jonathan (Becca Draeger) Horan; grandchildren Tristan and Logan Horan, Emilia and Alice Chomicz and Ellie Higbie; her stepmother, Edith Sylvester, her sisters-in-law, Judy Horan, Jan Ahlquist, Janet Sylvester and Sue Stanecki; brothers-in-law, Michael Stanecki and Mark Sylvester. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Dorothy Horan, his brother, Mickey Horan, his sister, Dottie Ferguson, and a toddler daughter, Laurie Catherine Horan. A visit will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church, University Ave, Middleton, prior to Christian Burial Mass at 10:30 am with Fr. Brian Wilk presiding. Interment will follow at Saint-Bernard cemetery. The family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary care provided by the doctors and nurses at Meriter Hospital and Agrace Hospice. Instead of flowers, Dick’s family invites you to raise a glass of fine Irish whiskey in honor of our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and friend. If you prefer a more traditional keepsake, memorials in Dick’s name at gofundme.com/e/RPHMemorial, Agrace HospiceCare, St Judes Research Hospital or VFW Post 8216, Middleton are suggested.
