A face cover / mask follows CDC guidelines to help reduce the spread of germs.
Charlotte, you might be able to remove these masks sooner than you think. As shown on MeckNC.gov, as of August 31, 2021, the COVID-19 positivity rate had to be below 5% for four consecutive weeks before the mask warrant was lifted. This has now changed. A new update on the mask’s tenure in Mecklenburg County says masks may come off if the positivity rate remains below 5% for seven consecutive dates.
According to WSOC-TV, the mandate would automatically be lifted once this goal is achieved. Today, Monday, November 15, the county reported that the metric was 5.1%. This will only happen again if the positivity rates stay low, so stay home if you feel sick. The seven consecutive day positivity rate is calculated on a rolling basis and includes all PCR tests reported to NC DHHS via electronic laboratory reports. Using the seven-day rate reduces the possibility of random spikes increasing the overall positivity rate.
The mask mandate details include the following:
- The warrant requires anyone 5 years of age or older to wear a mask indoors.
- This applies to stores, restaurants, cinemas, gymnasiums, offices, etc.
- A mask should be worn indoors unless you eat or drink.
- Private schools, many of which did not require masks, will now be subject to this mandate.
