The former My Thai restaurant, recently renamed Bambu, on John Street is closing. The former My Thai restaurant, recently renamed Bambu, on John Street is closing.

Bambu, formerly My-Thai, is closing its doors for good after two decades of serving Thai food on John Street North.

Hamilton’s go-to restaurant, Bambu – formerly My Thai – has permanently closed on John Street North.

Bambu owner Heidy Nguyen announced the downtown restaurant’s closure on social media on August 18, thanking the community for their support.

“The past 15 years with all of you have been truly rewarding,” Nguyen wrote.

My Thai opened downtown in 2001. Then-owner Vanh Kalong soon opened a second restaurant in Burlington in an effort to further expand the chain.

Three of Kalong’s restaurants remain, in Ancaster, Brantford and Cambridge, but at one time there were eight locations, including restaurants in Stoney Creek, Waterloo and Guelph.

The John Street site closed as My-Thai in 2020, before the pandemic. In May of the same year, Nguyen reopened – renamed Bambu.

In an Instagram post at the end of June 2022, Bambu announced that he was taking the month of July for a “summer break”. Following this, a comment in mid-August said he was “in negotiations for a lease [and] when this is complete we will update everyone.

A new catering business is opening in the space between Capri and Bike Hounds, near King William Street, Nguyen said in an Instagram post last week.

“Although I’m sad, I’m also very excited for the new restaurant that will occupy our space,” she added. “They are an amazing and experienced group of restaurants that I know will be a great addition to the downtown restaurant scene.

“I can’t say who they are yet, but I hope you continue to show them the same support you have shown me.”
