Couple hangs themselves to escape Covid-19 debt

A couple believed to have been deeply in debt due to Covid-19 at Mueang Chon Buri have been found hanged in their home, apparently by suicide. Neighbors say the man and woman were both food cart vendors struggling to find enough customers to make ends meet and turned to a loan shark to help them pay their bills.

Yesterday morning, the police received a call about the bodies found in their rental home in Na Pa. When the police arrived, they saw the man hanging from the front door by a rope. He was 57 years old and was from Chiang Rai. His wife was found inside the house suspended from a cable. She was 52 years old and was from Na Pa in Chon Buri.

The police who found the bodies examined the scene and saw no signs of struggle or violence and their bodies were unharmed, indicating that it was a suicide. A neighbor said it was the loan sharks who first found the couple when they came to collect the money. Police are investigating the couple’s allegations of debt and possible threats.

The neighbor shared information about the couple’s situation with police, saying restrictions and lockdowns from Covid-19 had devastated their food basket businesses and customers were scarce. The couple couldn’t make any money and got more and more indebted, and turned to loan sharks to pay the bills. The neighbor even shared the heartbreaking detail that loan sharks urging them to make payments suggested they kill themselves if they couldn’t pay.

The tragic deaths highlight the struggle of many workers who depend on tourism to attract customers and have been taken to extremes during Covid-19 closures. Many workers in the food, drink and entertainment industries demonstrated to demand government help or reopen.
