Synopsis
There's a time for playing it safe and a time for Risky Business.
Meet Joel Goodson, an industrious, college-bound 17-year-old and a responsible, trustworthy son. However, when his parents go away and leave him home alone in the wealthy Chicago suburbs with the Porsche at his disposal he quickly decides he has been good for too long and it is time to enjoy himself. After an unfortunate incident with the Porsche Joel must raise some cash, in a risky way.

'What the fuck' gives you freedom,
Freedom brings opportunity,
Opportunity makes your future.Cleverly written, well made,
prophetic and beautifully scored. This movie is so much better
than it has any right to be. -

Review by Josh Lewis ★★★★ 7
I used to think that how gorgeous and fun and sexy this was undermined or contradicted its satirical ideas (even though there are still obviously pointed moments in it like that detail of Tom throwing the homeless man off the subway car) but in actuality it's just being more honest about the surface pleasure and appeal that have been intentionally built into capitalism. It's an 80s MTV coming-of-age teen sex comedy with imagery so lyrical and a soundscape so lush (Tangerine Dream's follow-up to Michael Mann's Thief 🐐) it's hard to imagine a world where any of us let alone our perfect baby boy/preppy rich kid business major Joel Goodson here wouldn't be completely seduced by the corrupt adult world…

that scene on the train where Tom Cruise gets his ass grabbed while In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins played was when I realized that I wasn’t watching a movie, i was watching a film.

Review by Criterion 5
A sly piece of pop subversion, this irresistible satire of Reagan-era materialism features Tom Cruise in his star-is-born breakthrough as a Chicago suburban prepster whose college-bound life spirals out of control when his parents go out of town for the week and an enterprising call girl (Rebecca De Mornay) invites him to walk on the wild side. While Cruise boogying in his briefs yielded one of the most iconic pop-cultural moments of the 1980s, it is the film’s unexpected mix of tender romance (enhanced by a moody synth score by Tangerine Dream) and sharp-witted capitalist critique that remains fresh and daring.

i feel like "fuck it" should be something you say when you spend $100 on shoes, not when you decide to turn your house into a brothel

Review by Ian West ★★★★½ 11
Way darker than I remembered, revisiting this after YEARS had me leaning on the edge of my seat just waiting for something terrible to happen in each scene... like some coming of age teen sex comedy very specific Michael Mann vibes soaked in an ominous dread courtesy of the slammin’ Tangerine Dream score, excellent direction/editing, and fantastic turns from De Mornay and Cruise.
Plus Joey Pants.
It’s a shame this gets remembered for the old time rock n roll scene when the In the Air Tonight train car sex scene pisses all over it.

Review by Edgar Cochran ✝️ ★★★★ 20
Yes, 4 stars.
Potentially, this is Tom Cruise's second best film in his entire career, though not necessarily his best performance. Risky Business found, with surprising easiness, its pop-culture status among modern viewers. 75% of that popularity image has Tom Cruise dancing to the beat of "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, a scene which barely represents the entire dark atmosphere of this teen drama.
Risky Business is yet ANOTHER movie that puts us in the perspective of the rebellious young generation that came out from such an irresponsible previous generation: their parents. It was typical to see the parents playing passive antagonistic roles while these lost boys sought for liberty, either financial,…
