Sorceror Rogier will be a familiar character to all Elden Ring players, both as a resident of the Roundtable Hold and as one of the first co-operators you can summon in the game, helping you battle Margit. But Rogier also has a questline of his own, very easily missed, that provides some very interesting story and background.

In this guide, you can learn every step you need to take to make sure you get to experience all the lore and rewards this quest offers.
Starting The Quest

Before you get this quest started, you need to make sure Rogier is at Roundtable Hold, and you have not yet started Ranni's questline by speaking to her in Three Sisters and agreeing to be one of her servants. You can speak to Rogier if you like and receive his magic Rapier if he offers it, but his quest is actually triggered by following a secret path at Stormveil Castle.
Stormveil Castle

To begin this quest, start from the Secluded Cell Site Of Grace. Head out of this room into the area with the jars. Head to the upper level and follow the wooden path around the walls until you can reach an outside area. Go up again. Eventually, it will lead out onto a balcony with a seated corpse holding an item and a message on the floor. Read the message, which will turn out to be from Rogier.

Head left from here and down the rocky slope. You will come to another area that contains a door you can open to give you a shortcut back to the Liftside Chamber Site Of Grace. To progress, keep heading down by jumping onto the buttresses. Watch out for the bats here, as they can knock you off.

When you reach the bottom, move ahead until you reach an opening into a large lower level dotted with lights and items. After you enter this area, an Ulcerated Tree Spirit will spawn. Though this is a Lesser version of the monster, it is no joke, with some very damaging long-range attacks — also, their big body will make targeting them and focusing the camera on them difficult at times.

Once the spirit is defeated, approach the back of the room, and you will find a large face on the floor and the Prince Of Death's Cyst Talisman. Look for a bloodstain on the floor here, and you will see Rogier again. Now head back to Roundtable Hold.

Roundtable Hold

Speak to Rogier, and you will have a new option: "About the Corpse Under Stormveil." Rogier will tell you a story about the Black Knives and the origins of the Shattering. Once he has finished, go and speak to Fia. You must allow Fia to hold you enough times until you see the "Talk In Secret" dialogue option. She will tell you more about the Black Knives and give you a map. The location it references is the Black Knife Catacombs in North-Eastern Liurnia —head here to continue the quest.

Black Knife Catacombs

In the Catacombs, head down and through the first area until you reach the room with the blades that drop from the ceiling. Go to the middle one and stand on it after it has fallen so that when it rises again, it lets you jump to the platform on the left wall.
Continue past the enemies here until you reach a room with an archer that appears to be a dead end. Hit the wall at the back here, and it will open to reveal a further corridor leading to a Boss Room. Outside of the room, you can find a summon sign for D.

You will find a chapel containing a Black Knife Assassin when you pass through. This boss jumps around a lot but has heavily telegraphed attacks and not too much HP. You can be aggressive when attacking it and stagger it easily. If you have summoned D for help, it should be no problem.
Once the assassin is defeated, you will receive the Assassin's Cerulean Dagger Talisman and the quest item Black Knifeprint. Return to Roundtable Hold and bring this Rogier.
Final Steps

Rogier will be very excited at seeing the Black Knifeprint and ask that he be allowed to study it further. If you leave the Hold and return later, Rogier will then return the Knifeprint to you and ask you to find Ranni. If you have not yet found her, she can only be reached once you have defeated Royal Knight Loretta at Caria Manor. At this point, you can head on to Ranni's Rise and find her in the farthest, highest tower.
When you meet Ranni, you will have the dialogue option: "You must be Ranni the Witch, behind the Night of the Black Knives." Ranni will not be very impressed with your detective work, and after sharing some more information, she will send you away. Return to Rogier at the Hold again, and he will explain that he needs you to enter Ranni's service to learn more. Go back to Ranni, and you will now have the option to enter her service.

Once you have agreed to become one of Ranni's vassals, the next time your return to Roundtable Hold and speak to Rogier, he will mention that he is on the verge of a deep slumber. After a certain amount of in-game time has passed, and when you return to Roundtable Hold, you will find Rogier has died, leaving behind Rogier's Bell Bearing, his Spellblade clothing set, his rapier (if you have not yet received it), and Rogier's Letter. You can read the letter for a clue of some follow-up story to explore, but Rogier's quest ends here, and you can continue the story he started through D, Ranni, and Fia's questlines.
