The 7th APEC Food Security Ministerial meeting was held online on Friday, with agriculture and food ministers, as well as senior officials, calling for stronger cooperation to ensure food security in the Asia-Pacific region. BANGKOK, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Agriculture and food ministers and senior officials from Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies on Friday pledged enhanced cooperation to ensure food security in the region. region.
At the 7th APEC Food Security Ministerial held online, Thailand’s Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermchai Sri-On, who chaired the meeting, said health challenges , economic and environmental pressures have placed enormous pressure on the global food system.
Noting that APEC member economies are major producers and exporters of food and agricultural products, Mr. Chalermchai said that “there is a need to realign the work and objectives of APEC towards building a strong, inclusive and resilient community able to withstand future shocks”.
Meeting participants agreed to redouble efforts to support food security and trade facilitation, improve livelihoods and well-being, promote the sustainability of natural resources and the environment, enhance innovation and technology in the agri-food sector and balancing the economy, society and the environment. .
They also pledged to foster the active engagement of public-private partnerships in pursuit of synergy and cooperation to improve food security in the region.
During the meeting, an implementation plan for the food security roadmap towards 2030 was approved. ■
