LAKEWOOD, Colorado (CBS4) – Lakewood Police said one of their officers was involved in a shootout in the Belmar shopping district on Monday evening. Police officials say this wave of crime began with deadly shootings in Denver.
“We have every reason to believe that several cases in Denver are related, which happened before our incidents here in Lakewood,” said John Romero, spokesman for the Lakewood Police Department.
A total of five people were killed, including the suspect.

Lakewood Police said they first received a call about gunfire at Colfax Avenue and Kipling Street at around 6 p.m. One person died at the scene. Police shut down a section of a parking lot in front of a liquor store, tattoo parlor and Thai restaurant.
The police say they have gathered information on the suspect vehicle.
Officers found this suspicious vehicle in the Belmar area and, when they attempted to approach the suspect, shot at officers who retaliated against the suspect. The suspect was able to escape on foot.
There was also a heavy police presence on Alaska Drive and Vance Street. Police said the suspect had committed a “threatening crime” in a store while he was armed.
The suspect then entered the Hyatt House hotel on Alaska Drive. The suspect allegedly shot a person inside the hotel and the victim was taken to hospital. The police have no information on this victim.
Officers then again confronted the suspect outside the hotel and the suspect allegedly shot them, hitting an officer. The officer is in surgery in an unknown condition.
The suspect died at the scene. Lakewood Police officials say they do not know whether they died as a result of gunfire by officers.
A woman told CBS4’s Jeff Todd that she was in an Xfinity store when she heard gunshots.
“We were right there, my husband and I. You could hear the noise outside. It was like a hit, then maybe five or six more and a few more after that. Xfinity has done a tremendous job. They put us inside. We were put in the back room and the doors lowered. Fortunately, we didn’t see too much, ”she said.
She also told CBS4 that two of the store’s workers were hit by shrapnel.
Police have placed several evidence markers at this intersection in front of the hotel.
