Detroit has a growing vegetarian and vegan food scene. If you avoid meat or all animal products, it can sometimes be difficult to find restaurants that meet your needs. Sure, you might be able to eat a side salad, but you often feel like you’re missing the very well food and have limited options when dining out.

These 12 Detroit restaurants have plenty of mouthwatering options for vegans and vegetarians, yet delicious enough to satisfy any appetite.

Detroit Vegan Soul West – 100% vegan

Detroit Vegan Soul West is Detroit’s original vegan restaurant and arguably one of the most popular destinations for vegan food in the city. Here you can find comfort food with a vegan twist. Think vegan pizzas, spring rolls, macaroni and cheese, lasagna, poboys and more. As well as being completely vegan, the food here is also free of GMOs, additives, flour and refined sugars and preservatives.

Street beetroot – 100% vegan

Street beet is a growing vegan pop-up business that has been operating at Third Street Bar for the past year. They’re open Thursday through Sunday for dinner, take-out, or curbside service and they often throw special events. Everything here is 100% vegan and 100% comfort food, which you probably haven’t eaten for a long time if you are vegan! Favorites include the Crisp Supreme, Fake Chicken Caesar Wrap, Hot Fake Chicken Sandwich, and more.

Chili Mustard Onions – 100% vegan

Want to participate in the classic Detroit dog coney, but are you vegan? Chili Mustard Onions is your answer! This restaurant is completely vegan and uses vegan Quorn dogs, it serves vegan versions of the original Detroit coney dog.

Seva Detroit – 100% vegetarian

Seva has been a community favorite since it opened in 2011, located in Midtown, not far from the Detroit Institute of Arts. Seva’s menu is entirely vegetarian and also includes many vegan options. Choose from dishes like vegan nacho dip, famous yam fries, vegan Mac, pad thai and more.

Inn Season Café – 100% vegetarian

Auberge Saison Café is a fully vegetarian cafe with plenty of vegan options, located in Royal Oak on the Detroit Metro. They have been serving plant-based foods to the community for 30 years! Unfortunately, Inn Season Café is currently closed due to the ongoing pandemic, but it plans to reopen in November 2021. Stay tuned!

7 Greens

7 Greens is conveniently located in downtown Detroit and specializes in healthy, fresh, locally sourced food in a relaxed environment. This restaurant is not entirely vegetarian, but many burritos and salads can be vegetarian or vegan.

Maru

Maru is a Michigan sushi favorite, with locations statewide including one in downtown Detroit. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, including fried vegetarian gyoza, vegan simply green sushi rolls, vegan boogie veggie sushi rolls, and a very extensive cocktail menu.

Pie-Sci Pizza

Pie-Sci Pizza is one of Detroit’s most creative pizza places. There are some really inventive pizza topping combinations here – and the chance to make your own! Pie-Sci is also focused on offering an inclusive menu, with vegan pizza bases and toppings as well as Follow Your Heart vegan mozzarella.

Lager House by PJ

Located in Corktown, PJ’s Lager House is a pub that offers plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. This is the oldest restaurant on this list of vegan restaurants in Detroit – serving the Detroiters since 1914! At PJ’s Lager House there is an extensive beer menu and live music every night around 10 p.m. The menu conveniently labels all vegan options – and there are plenty of them. Try the fried avocado dips, jackfruit sandwich or nachos (with vegan queso), vegan jambalaya, tempeh reuben and more.

Treat Dreams Dessert Emporium

Treat Dreams Dessert Emporium is a beloved ice cream and dessert store, located in Ferndale on the Detroit Metro. There are over 1,200 flavors of ice cream on the menu here, including plenty of vegan ice cream options.

Come on Sy Thai

Go Sy Thai is a popular quick-casual eatery, with locations in Midtown, Capitol Park, and Livonia, serving Thai food to order. The menu offers many vegetarian and vegan options. Vegan options are listed on the menu. The classic pad thai here is vegan, and other options include vegetable rolls, pad pak, gay gang curry, curry noodles, see iew, and more.

Ale Mary’s brewery

Ale Mary’s brewery, in downtown Royal Oak, is known for its beer and American cuisine. Littler is known for its many vegan options. Try a delicious vegan milkshake, hot vegan Nashville chicken sandwich, vegan “McMary” sandwich, fried pickles and more.
